The Great Andromeda Galaxy, M31 (NGC 224), is our Milky Way Galaxy's closest galactic neighbor in space. M31 has an apparent magnitude of 3.4 and contains a mass of approx. 200-300 billion suns. Light from the galaxy begabs its journey to us during the Pleistocene epoch 2.2 million years ago. A mirror image of our own galaxy, this huge aggregation of stars, gas and dust spans 150 000 light years. Its neightboring satellite galaxies, M32 and M110, are visible as two bright objects in the picture.
