The Helix Nebula is one of the closest of all planetary nebulae. The object consists of a large shell of very tenuous gas od oxygen atomsbeing excited by the ultraviolet radiation flowing out from from a extremely hot central star. The ring itself glows with the light of excited nitrogen and hydrogen atoms. A closer look into the center shows a helical structure with two twists, but this is an optical illusion.
